The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) Phakamani/Simukai Women’s Network, recently visited Harare Children’s Home, where they conducted a clean-up and donated foodstuffs and clothing to the children residing there.

The Chairperson of the Phakamani/Simukai Women’s Network, Marian Chihobvu, and her delegation took time to tour the institution, engaging with the children and listening to their heartbreaking stories.

"Many of the children have endured abandonment, abuse, and trauma, making the visit even more meaningful. This is a significant step in ensuring that women never turn their backs on the less fortunate. The power of love, unity, and generosity can make a real difference in these children’s lives,” said Chihobvu.

ZPCS Superintendent, Tsitsidzashe Chikumbo, who oversees Harare Children’s Home, expressed deep gratitude for the support, acknowledging the difficult circumstances the children face. She went on to describe the trauma experienced by the children:

“Harare Children’s Home cares for children until they reach 18 years of age, providing shelter, food, education, and emotional support. Every child in the institution has experienced some form of trauma. Some are orphans, others have escaped abusive homes, while some have no recollection of why they ended up here.

"The most urgent needs at the home include food, clothing, education, and psychological support. The donations from the Phakamani Simukai Women’s Network have helped address some of these pressing issues,” said Chikumbo.

ZPCS has also been maintaining the institution's garden.

“These inmates, affectionately known as the 'Orange Boys,' contribute to labour and maintenance support, ensuring that the home remains clean, safe, and a sustainable environment,” said Chikumbo.

The visit by the Phakamani/Simukai Women’s Network serves as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility to give back to the community. Through these ongoing efforts, Harare Children’s Home continues to provide hope and healing for its vulnerable children.
