The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) is close to securing a significant deal with a Chinese company to invest in the construction of the long-awaited Harare-Chitungwiza railway line.
During a session of the Parliament's Public Accounts Committee yesterday, National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) General Manager, Ms. Respina Zinyanduko, announced that final negotiations are anticipated to be completed within the next year. This development is expected to significantly enhance public transportation in Zimbabwe.
“We have engaged several partners interested in the Chitungwiza line. Recently, we cleared the servitude of the line, addressing issues where unauthorized developments had occurred along the designated railway corridor. With support from the Ministry of Local Government and local authorities, notices were issued to those encroaching upon this area to ensure the land is reserved for railway development,” Ms Zinyanduko explained.
Ms Zinyanduko emphasized that the project is highly viable due to strong passenger demand.
“A Chinese company has emerged as a leading contender, proposing a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, and is already engaged in talks to rehabilitate existing NRZ lines. This company has expressed keen interest in operating the Harare-Chitungwiza route, which is one of the most promising for passenger trains. The population commuting between Chitungwiza and Harare is substantial, and we are confident that passenger trains will run at full capacity.
“This route holds immense potential and aligns with our goal of improving urban mobility. By involving private sector players in funding and managing new rail lines, NRZ hopes to modernize Zimbabwe’s aging rail infrastructure without relying solely on government funding. This approach has already drawn several expressions of interest, indicating a growing momentum for the project,” she stated.
In addition to benefiting local commuters, the Harare-Chitungwiza line holds strategic significance. This project was one of 17 agreements signed between Zimbabwe and China at the recent Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing. These deals signal stronger ties between Zimbabwe and China, with transport and infrastructure emerging as focal points.
“We aim to finalize partner selection within the year. This timeline is achievable, as the same company is also exploring freight opportunities with NRZ, making the collaboration even more promising,” said Zinyanduko.
Once completed, the Harare-Chitungwiza railway line will provide an efficient and affordable transportation option for thousands of commuters, reducing congestion and supporting local economic growth. For NRZ, this project is part of a broader vision to modernize Zimbabwe’s rail network and enhance its role in national development. By tapping into innovative investment models, NRZ is laying the groundwork for a more connected, accessible future for Zimbabwean cities.
