The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has achieved an extraordinary milestone by clinching the prestigious Early-Stage trophy at the 2024 Enactus World Cup championships held last week.
The Enactus World Cup, held in Astana, featured teams from around the world competing in various categories centred on innovation, social entrepreneurship, and community impact.
NUST, representing Zimbabwe in League 3, faced formidable competition from nations such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Puerto Rico, Colombia, India, and South Africa.
Through their innovative project proposals and dedication to addressing pressing social issues, NUST secured the top position in their league, propelling them to the finals.
A NUST team member shared their pride following the win, saying, "This championship is not just an individual victory but a testament to the dedication of our entire team. We are thrilled to have represented Zimbabwe on a global stage, showcasing the spirit of innovation and resilience."
The competition drew participants from twelve countries, all vying for top honours in two leagues. NUST’s victory is a reflection of its commitment to social entrepreneurship and sustainable development, as the team presented solutions designed to address local and global challenges.
Dr. Peter Zwidhekalanga Khumalo, a NUST lecturer and one of the team’s supporters, expressed joy over the achievement.
“This remarkable win lifts the flag of NUST and highlights our institution’s focus on empowering students to engage in research and innovation. It aligns with our vision of creating productive, solution-orientated graduates,” said Dr. Khumalo.
The NUST team is already planning for future competitions and said that they were determined to make a difference in the country.
“This victory encourages us to keep working on projects that bring positive change. We hope to inspire others to engage in social entrepreneurship and continue making a difference in communities,” said a NUST team member.
Social media was abuzz with congratulations as supporters of NUST celebrated their victory.
One netizen, Owen Mdadisi, took to X to praise the team, saying, “Thank you, team NUST, for your outstanding achievement. Competing against some of the world’s most formidable teams, you have elevated Zimbabwe's profile and proven that we are indeed a hub of great minds.”
