Uganda Airlines is set to commence flights into Zimbabwe, connecting Kampala to Harare in a significant boost to Zimbabwe’s aviation sector.
In an interview with this publication, spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport Linda Chamuita, revealed that the inaugural flight for the airline will be on the 25th of September 2024, marking the beginning of a new chapter in air travel between the two countries.
“Uganda Airlines will start with four flights per week, providing a vital link between Kampala and Harare. This development is expected to enhance connectivity and foster economic growth,” she said.
The new route is expected to create job opportunities in both countries, particularly in the aviation and tourism sectors. The influx of travellers will likely spur demand for hospitality services, further stimulating economic growth.
“This initiative is not just about improving air travel; it’s about creating a foundation for stronger economic ties and mutual growth. We anticipate that this will lead to more collaborative ventures between Zimbabwe and Uganda,” Chamuita said.
Industry experts have welcomed this move, highlighting its potential economic benefits. Aviation analyst, Tawanda Mukumba applauded the introduction of the new route.
“This is a significant milestone for Zimbabwe’s aviation industry. The new flights will not only increase connectivity but also stimulate tourism and business travel between Zimbabwe and Uganda. It opens up new opportunities for trade and investment,” Mukumba noted.
Similarly, economist Mary Gwena echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the broader economic impact.
“The commencement of Uganda Airlines flights to Zimbabwe is a positive development for our economy. Enhanced air connectivity can lead to increased foreign direct investment and boost sectors such as tourism and agriculture. It’s a win-win situation for both countries,” Gwena stated.
The introduction of these flights is seen as a strategic move to strengthen bilateral ties and promote economic collaboration. With four flights per week, businesses and tourists will benefit from improved accessibility, potentially leading to increased bilateral trade and tourism revenue.
Meanwhile, Uganda is also set to explore vast opportunities in agriculture, which Zimbabwean farmers can tap into through exchange programs. This agricultural collaboration is expected to bring about shared knowledge and practices, benefiting the agricultural sectors of both nations.
