Government is committed to sustainable development and environmental protection, as evidenced by the recent launch of the Odzani Honey World Beekeeping and Agroforestry project in Chidazembe Ward 18, Mutasa District of Manicaland Province.
This initiative, officially unveiled during the 2024 National Fire Week, aims to remind the nation of the imminent, yet avoidable, challenges associated with veld fires during the dry season.
Guest of honor at the launch, Minister of Environment, Climate, and Wildlife, Sithembiso Nyoni highlighted the Government’s proactive measures, which include setting aside the second week of May for veld fire awareness.
“This period marks the beginning of intense environmental education, focusing on sustainable ecosystem management and veld fire prevention.
“The theme for this year's campaign, "Prevent Veld Fires - Protect the Environment and Livelihoods," underscores the critical link between sustainable food systems and effective veld fire management,” said Minister Nyoni.
Veld fires pose a significant threat to agriculture, leading to the destruction of crops, pastures, and equipment, which in turn cause food shortages and financial losses.
In addition to the importance of sustainable practices, the Government has set the 2024 veld fire restriction period from July 1 to November 30.
Furthermore Minister Nyoni emphasized that this beekeeping project is not just about honey production but also about promoting biodiversity and supporting local communities.
“The project aims to empower communities through education and skills training in beekeeping and agroforestry.
“The launch of the Chidazembe project represents a crucial step towards combating (climate change and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals,” she stated.
In an interview with Harare post, Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza, highlighted various strategies adopted by the province to minimize fire spread, including beekeeping and agroforestry.
“The Odzani Beekeeping project is a conservation initiative encouraging locals to protect the environment by recognizing the economic benefits of beekeeping.
“This initiative aligns with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s vision of industrializing rural communities. The province is developing a honey processing plant and branding initiatives, as⁰ ZimTrade facilites with market connection,” said Minister Mugadza.
The Chidazembe Beekeeping and Agroforestry project stands as a testament to Zimbabwe's commitment to sustainable development and the well-being of its citizens.
In 2023, Zimbabwe experienced a significant reduction in veld fire damage, with a 40% decrease in Manicaland Province compared to the previous year.
