Gideon Shoko, a longstanding ally of Nelson Chamisa within the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), now finds himself in the eye of a political storm as he is being accused of not being a genuine opposition member.
Disgruntled CCC members in Bulawayo have stepped forward, accusing Shoko of being a covert saboteur, allegedly working to dismantle that party from within and lining his pockets in the process.
Sources within the CCC in Bulawayo have disclosed a disturbing history of Shoko's purported betrayal, asserting that he has consistently acted against the interests of the opposition.
According to insiders, Shoko was allegedly the mastermind behind the first spate of recalls for Members of Parliament in the MDC in 2014. His collaboration with Thokozani Khupe, Douglas Mwonzora, and Gift Banda resulted in a series of recalls that shook that party's foundation.
The source further revealed that Shoko recommended the recall of Matson Hlalo from the Senate, subsequently replacing him with one Maphungwana, who tragically passed away shortly afterwards.
Mwonzora, positioned strategically as Secretary General, filled the void with Shoko.
The same tactics were allegedly employed by Shoko and his allies in 2018, causing internal strife by pitting double candidates against each other.
In 2023, during the candidate selection process, Shoko purportedly agreed to back a faction led by Tendai Biti and Welshman Ncube for council and parliamentary positions.
The source claimed that Shoko ensured the election of unpopular candidates like Descent Bajila, who is now implicated in recalls along with Tshabangu.
The source added that WhatsApp groups in the Pelandaba-Tshabalala area of Bulawayo have become a battleground for political dissent, with Shoko leading the charge.
“Shoko has invaded these digital spaces, vehemently criticising and dissuading members from supporting Chamisa. The messages circulating within these groups are urging people to disengage from Chamisa, injecting a new wave of political discourse into the online communities. This unexpected development has triggered heated debates and discussions, with others calling for Shoko not to be given another leadership role in the opposition movement,” said the source.
The same source alleged that Shoko has ambitions of becoming the leader of the CCC in Bulawayo, further deepening the suspicion of his motives.
The source added that some CCC members were shocked by Shoko’s claim of friendship with Nelson Chamisa.
“Members are questioning whether both Shoko and Chamisa are truly dedicated opposition figures or if he has been unwittingly entangled in political machinations,” said the source.
As the CCC grapples with internal strife and allegations of betrayal, the leadership must now confront these accusations against Shoko, a figure once considered a loyal ally.
The opposition movement finds itself at a crossroads, facing challenges from within that threaten its unity and credibility.
