Efforts by the Second Republic to enhance road safety in 2023 have proven successful, through the implementation of comprehensive measures which have witnessed a notable decrease in fatal accidents and casualties, the Harare Post can reveal.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) reported a considerable improvement in road safety statistics during the festive season for the period between 15th and 26th December 2023 compared to the same timeframe in 2022. This period covered significant public holidays, including Unity Day, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day.
“Road traffic accidents decreased from 1194 under the reviewed period of 15 to 26 December 2023 to 1480 during the same period in 2022. Fatal accidents reduced to 60 in 2023 from 71 in 2022. The total number of people killed was 87 in 2023 from 102 in the previous year during the same period.”
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police further informed the nation that the following road traffic accident statistics were recorded from 15th to 26th December 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.
“On Unity Day, 22nd December 2023, 125 road traffic accidents were recorded countrywide of which five (05) were fatal while 24 others were injured compared to 124 road traffic accidents with two (02) fatal, two (02) deaths and 18 people injured in the year 2022.
“On Christmas day, 25th December 2023, 71 road traffic accidents were recorded countrywide of which 07 were fatal, killing 08 people and injuring 78 people. In the same period in 2022, 133 road traffic accidents were recorded with 12 were fatal, 20 deaths and 48 people injured, read the statement.”
The Zimbabwe Republic Police in collaboration with relevant Authorities deployed police officers to conduct roadblocks, traffic blitz, stop and search motorised, cycle and foot patrols throughout the country to curb crime, road traffic accidents as well as maintain law and order during this festive season.
