Outrage and concern over issues of drug and substance abuse as well as child abuse have swept through the nation following a viral video depicting minors consuming alcohol in the Harare Central Business District over the festivities.

Citizens have called on the Government to tighten its laws with regards outlets that disperse alcohol to minors as well as  parents who fail to monitor their underage children exposing them to illicit ills at a time the country is battling to contain drugs and substance abuse among the youths.

"I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the video. It's disheartening to witness such behaviour, especially among children who have not even reached the age of majority. Parents need to take responsibility for their children's actions," exclaimed Tsitsi, a youth who resides in Harare,

The sentiment echoes across the country, with John Mandizvidza, a Mutare resident emphasizing the need for immediate Government intervention.

"The Government must intensify its efforts to arrest anyone involved in the sale or distribution of substances to minors. We can't let this slide; it's a threat to our future.

“Once these children are identified, they should be brought in to identify shops that sold alcohol to under aged children, and their licences should be revoked with immediate effect,” said Mandizvidza.

Another citizen, Mrs Matsa who is also a parent echoed a call for accountability among citizens, saying, "Parents or guardians should be held accountable for the actions of their minor children. It's a collective responsibility to ensure a safe and nurturing environment for our children."

Matsa went further to emphasize the importance of keeping children within the safety of foster homes, "If kids stay in foster care there should be strict monitoring and supervision even during festivities. They should not be allowed to roam freely and engage in such harmful activities."

Another citizen who spoke on the basis of anonymity, urged fellow citizens to be vigilant in their communities, stating, "We must look out for one another. If you see something, say something. It's not just about the Government; it's about us as a community taking a stand against this menace."

"Adults involved in the sale of alcohol to kids should be sought after and held accountable. It's a grave offense that must not go unpunished." Added the citizen

Meanwhile in a statement, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the developments that the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is actively investigating the viral issue and has identified two minors aged 13 and 11. Their parents have also been identified, and the two minors are currently assisting the police with their investigations.

This swift action demonstrates the Government's dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of the nation's youth. The call for accountability and responsibility is being answered through concrete measures aimed at curbing this troubling trend.
