President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday handed over 18 brand new vehicles to Chiefs from across the country at an event in Harare, attended by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, Cabinet Ministers, senior Government officials and members of the Chief’s Council.
The gesture is part of Government’s pledge to make sure that traditional leaders are empowered and their integrity in society enhanced.
Speaking during the handover ceremony of the brand new Isuzu vehicles, President Mnangagwa urged the Chiefs to make good use of the vehicles, adding that Government will try by all means necessary to fulfil its promises of improving the welfare of traditional leaders.
“We will stand by our pledge to ensure Chiefs get access to electricity, water, good roads and vehicles every five years. This I hope will enable you to execute your duties of uniting people, instilling and preserving our culture,” said President Mnangagwa.
This was the fourth batch of vehicles to be delivered to traditional leaders after the Government promised each of the 282 Chiefs in the country a vehicle to enhance their mobility.
Traditional leaders play an important role in society as custodians of cultural values, making sure that people live in peace and harmony, resolving disputes as well as facilitating development.
