Panic has reportedly gripped the MDC Alliance following revelations that a lot of its members have approached the ruling ZANU PF seeking admission into the party.
A source within the MDC Alliance confided in this publication that the opposition party has since directed its Provincial leadership to take stock of their grassroots structures following recent defections of its members as well as reports that many are on the verge of joining the ruling party.
“The party (MDC Alliance) has been frightened by the recent defections of its members to ZANU PF. The president (Nelson Chamisa) has directed that the Provincial leadership should immediately take stock of the party’s structures to ascertain the actual numbers of our support base. The Provincial chairpersons are expected to report their findings to the Organising Secretary Amos Chibaya before mid-April 2021,”said the source.
The same source added that the head counting task is likely going to be difficult as that party’s structures are in shambles.
“The head counting task is not an easy one considering the shambolic structures of the party. A lot of the party’s supporters are not in the structures and it will make it difficult for the Provincial leadership to deliver on the task given to them by the president (Chamisa),”added the source.
According to the source, the MDC Alliance leadership have also been tasked to gauge people’s perceptions in the event that party changes its name.
The source revealed that Chamisa is contemplating dumping the name MDC Alliance and is expected to rebrand his political movement before the 2023 plebiscite.
“Chamisa has hinted on name change of the party and has directed the party provincial leadership to inquire from the supporters if they support the idea of name change. The president (Chamisa) is likely to reveal the new name for the party after consultation with the grassroots,” said the source.
Meanwhile, the MDC Alliance has been hard hit with defections of senior members to ZANU PF.
Former MDC Alliance deputy treasurer, Lilian Timveous, Blessing Chebundo and Tracy Mutinhiri are some of the senior members who have dumped Chamisa’s political outfit which they have described as a white man’s party birthed to push the agenda of our former colonizers.
