Chiredzi is set to make history as it hosts the official launch of the 2025 National Culture Month celebrations, a move residents describe as a landmark achievement under the Second Republic’s decentralisation agenda.

The event, to be held next Thursday at Rusununguko Clinic, will be officiated by President Emmerson Mnangagwa and is expected to spotlight the district’s rich cultural heritage while ushering in a wave of development.

Local leaders are commending the Second Republic’s focus on inclusive governance.

“The Second Republic is walking the talk when it comes to decentralising national programmes. This is not just a celebration of culture; it’s a statement of intent to develop all parts of Zimbabwe, including those that have long been marginalised,” said Councillor John Mashingaidze of Ward 32, Chiredzi East Constituency.

Chiredzi East Constituency legislator, Honourable Siyaki Mundungehama, confirmed that 20 boreholes have been drilled so far, with village business units being established at each location.

“We had areas facing serious water challenges, but that has changed. Preparations are progressing well, and the community is eagerly anticipating this memorable occasion,” he said.

The decision to host the National Culture Month in Chiredzi has been welcomed with great enthusiasm by locals, who view it as long-overdue recognition of their cultural identity—particularly the Shangani community.

“We have been remembered as the Shangani people. This is our time to showcase our culture to the world,” said one resident.

Another resident echoed the sentiment, adding, “We are seeing tangible development in our area. Hosting this event is a huge honour, and it brings hope that our region will never be left behind again.”

The celebrations are not only cultural in nature but are also driving socio-economic transformation. Legacy projects tied to the commemorations include the establishment of village business units and infrastructure development such as the drilling of boreholes—key interventions that are already improving lives in the region.

The National Culture Month commemorations are held in recognition of World Day of Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, observed globally on May 21. Established by UNESCO in 2001, the day encourages cultural expression and unity in diversity.

With President Mnangagwa set to grace the event, Chiredzi is not only celebrating its unique cultural identity but also stepping into a future of inclusion, development, and national pride.
