The MDC-A leader Nelson Chamisa, has been left with an egg on the face owing to defections from trusted lieutenants who have defected to Zanu PF.
According to an inside source who spoke on condition of anonymity, more defections were in the pipeline due to the party’s pathetic financial position, as most donors had pulled out.
“Donors have since tightened their pockets, finding reason to excuse themselves from their previously agreed financial commitments which they had pledged for one reason or another.
“Some have been citing a tough financial year due to covid-19 obligations, while others want to give the Mnangagwa administration a chance as the economy seems to be improving. Others have declared their displeasure in the way Chamisa has been handling party funds,” said the source.
Naively selling out the financial state of the party, the source revealed that most MDC-A employees had last received salaries beginning of 2020.
“Most subscribing party members have also tightened their pockets arguing that nothing tangible was coming from Chamisa’s side, especially having failed to lift a finger during the much hyped 31 July demonstrations last year which they had miscalculated to be the game changer.”
Over the months, the MDC- A has been handing out a begging bowl to the public, with the latest being the citizens convergence mantra meant to entice the public into lending a helping hand (financially) in the belief that it’s a citizen driven initiative.
“As much as people love politics, they need to see some real action on the ground unlike mere promises, a situation which has since characterized the party, under Chamisa’s leadership,” concluded the source.
“Previously, the MDC dismissed Mugwadi when he came out saying that by the end of the year, two third of the MDC Standing Committee and National Executive Committee members would have defected to Zanu PF, but it seems it’s slowly becoming a reality. These unending defections will certainly weigh down the party, and support confidence. It’s time Chamisa acts before it’s too late,” added political analyst, Cornwell Muzhunje.
