Analysts have said that the Americans have a lot to learn from electoral bodies such as the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) on how to run elections.
This follows the chaotic elections held last week in America where President Donald Trump is refusing to concede defeat to President-elect Joe Biden, citing irregularities and vote rigging.
Former MDC Spokesperson and Harare lawyer, Obert Gutu said America has a lot to learn from ZEC on how to conduct free and fair elections.
“Americans have got a lot to learn from ZEC on how to efficiently run an election. There were reports of shambolic polling in several states such as Nevada and Wisconsin. There were confirmed reports of dead voters voting in Nevada. Perhaps they should send a team to Zimbabwe on a study tour of ZEC,” said Gutu.
Gutu’s sentiments were echoed by one Twitter user @matigary who said the US has a lot to learn from Zimbabwe about elections.
“The US needs electoral reforms. Zimbabwe has a lot to teach the US. For instance, Zimbabwe can teach the US on how to use transparent ballot boxes, employ the V11 vote tallying system and announce election results in time,” tweeted @matigary.
Bloomberg writer, Marc Champion, said it’s high time the Americans improve their electoral systems as the current one is usually marred with accusations of vote manipulation and rigging.
“Americans take pride in having the world’s oldest constitutional democracy. However, the 2020 presidential election has cruelly exposed structural flaws that mark the US electoral system as among the weakest of any advanced democracy. As old and newer democracies have raced ahead, America has not felt the need to learn,” wrote Champion.
The recently held US presidential elections are the most disputed in history with the incumbent President, Trump, threatening to seek legal recourse after claiming that the elections were rigged in Biden’s favour.
