President Emmerson Mnangagwa has showed his willingness to address issues involving the Gukurahundi by appointing the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission to oversee the healing process.

Speaking at the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, President Mnangagwa responded to CNN Christine Amanpour about Gukurahundi.

“At the time what happened, my predecessor said it was a moment of madness, that’s what he said, which a result of what is happening internally is. But when I took over, I felt that we needed to have finality of this issue. So I appointed a Peace and National Reconciliation Commission which is now eight months into investigations and gathering evidence,

And whatever report they are going to make, I have promised the nation that l will make it public,” President said.

President added that it would be on the basis of the report that he would be man enough to accept whatever would come out of it.

“We should be man enough as a Government to accept whatever recommendations are made and see how, as a Government, we comply with the recommendations of the report. We will act according to the report,”

The NPRC was established under Sections 251 to 253 of the Constitution to ensure post-conflict justice, healing and reconciliation, to develop programmes to promote national healing, unity and peaceful conflict resolution and would run for the next 10 years.
