President Emmerson Mnangagwa has reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to empowering persons with disabilities (PWDs) through income-generating projects, ensuring that their voices are heard in national development policies.
Speaking at State House, in Harare on Wednesday, where he met with disability associations, President Mnangagwa emphasized that his Government remains determined to support PWDs in achieving economic self-sufficiency. As part of this commitment, the Government availed US$40,000 to disability associations to boost their businesses and promote financial independence.
“It is pleasing to note that our efforts are aligned with the domestication of international conventions and protocols. This unity of purpose and culture of working together must be sustained to promote the dignity of all persons with disabilities. Guided by our mantra of ‘‘leaving no one and no place behind,’’be assured that your voices will always be heard in the formulation of national development policies and programmes,” President Mnangagwa said.
The President stressed the importance of self-reliance and economic independence, assuring PWDs that the Government will continue funding their agriculture, mining, and business ventures to promote inclusive development.
“My Government is determined to facilitate and support you in your enterprises and income-generating activities. Count on us as we work together to build a more inclusive economy. I urge the nation to adapt to the changing socio-economic environment and embrace innovative, inclusive, and empowering models of development,” he said.
President Mnangagwa further highlighted that the Government is working towards fast-tracking the enactment of the Persons with Disabilities Bill, a key step in strengthening legal protections and ensuring PWDs’ full participation in all sectors.
“Our Vision 2030 and National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) recognize disability inclusion as a fundamental pillar of national development. Government ministries have established departments for gender mainstreaming, inclusivity, and wellness, ensuring that disability inclusion is at the center of public sector operations,” he noted.
Governments continued financial support and the expedited implementation of disability-friendly policies will play a critical role in empowering PWDs and enhancing the viability of their businesses. With dedicated resources and policy backing, persons with disabilities are poised to contribute meaningfully to Zimbabwe’s economic development.
