The European Union (EU) has commended Zimbabwe for its ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence (GBV) and promote gender equality.

The recognition highlights the country’s commitment to advancing women’s rights and creating a safer environment for women and girls.

The praise came during the HeForShe Solidarity March from Rainbow Towers Hotel to Harare Town House yesterday.

European Union Ambassador Jobst von Kirchmann reiterated the EU’s commitment to supporting Zimbabwe in its pursuit of gender equality.

“The Team Europe is delighted to continue accompanying Zimbabwe in its ambition to fully operationalise existing constitutional and policy commitments and achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment. We have a long track record in supporting gender equality in Zimbabwe and have actively supported the Government’s commendable decision to sign the high-level political compact on ending gender-based violence and harmful practices,” Ambassador Kirchmann stated.

He further emphasised the importance of global partnerships in tackling harmful practices and empowering women.

“Global partnerships are not merely advantageous but essential in addressing harmful practices that undermine women’s empowerment. We advocate for every man to step up and be part of this monumental cause,” he said.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa, also reaffirmed Government’s dedication to eliminating GBV.

“We are here today to reaffirm our unwavering commitment to combating gender-based violence, a pervasive issue that remains a formidable barrier to gender equality in our society. It is absolutely vital that we create safe environments for everyone, particularly for women and girls, who bear the brunt of this violence. They should be able to navigate their communities without fear,” she said.

Government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs, has introduced several programs aimed at addressing GBV.

These initiatives include community awareness campaigns, capacity-building workshops for local leaders, and partnerships with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to provide support services for survivors of GBV.

The Ministry is also working on legal reforms to enhance protective measures for victims and improve access to justice.

As Zimbabwe continues to strengthen its policies and initiatives, Government remains committed to fostering a society where women and girls can live free from the fear of violence and discrimination.
