Discontent is reportedly brewing within the country’s opposition movement, with some members voicing concerns about Nelson Chamisa's suitability to continue leading any opposition party.
Allegations of waning commitment to the opposition cause and suspected collaboration with the ruling party, Zanu PF, have emerged, sparking debate over his future role in the political landscape.
A source within the opposition, who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity, claimed that Chamisa’s support within the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has significantly dwindled.
According to the source, suspicions are mounting that Chamisa may be “in bed with the ruling party to destabilize the opposition movement.”
"Chamisa’s decision to abandon CCC instead of resolving the challenges it faced shows a lack of commitment to the opposition cause. He is not demonstrating the political fortitude necessary to lead us through this critical time. Many of us now believe he might be a paid agent working to undermine the opposition’s success," the source revealed.
The source disclosed that clandestine meetings have been held among some CCC members to discuss the possibility of forging ahead without Chamisa.
These members reportedly feel that the opposition’s potential for unity and strength has been compromised under his leadership.
Adding to the discord, some of Chamisa’s once-loyal confidants, including journalist Hopewell Chin’ono, political analyst Dr. Pedzisai Ruhanya, and CCC stalwart Lovemore Chinoputsa, have reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with Chamisa’s perceived lack of political direction.
"The lack of clarity and decisive leadership from Chamisa has left even his closest allies doubting his intentions. There is a strong sense that he is not as committed as he claims to be," the source said.
Tensions have also flared over allegations of tribal bias within the CCC, with Chamisa accused of sidelining Ndebele members in leadership roles.
"There is growing anger among some members who feel Chamisa has removed Ndebele leaders from positions of authority in the party, further alienating key regional supporters," the source added.
In light of these developments, some disenchanted opposition members are now advocating for Welshman Ncube to take the helm of the movement.
Ncube, a seasoned politician and former MDC-Nleader, is seen by some as a more mature, educated, and focused alternative to Chamisa.
"We believe Welshman Ncube has the experience, the strategic mind, and the vision to unite the opposition and chart a clear path forward," the source emphasized.
Efforts to reach Nelson Chamisa for comment were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to messages left on his WhatsApp platform.
With the opposition movement at a crossroads, the question of leadership remains a pressing issue, and the outcome of these internal deliberations could have far-reaching implications for Zimbabwe’sopposition political future.
