The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has intensified efforts to curb traffic congestion and lawlessness on the roads during the festive season, deploying officers across Harare’s central business district (CBD) to enforce traffic regulations and ensure smooth traffic flow.
This publication observed police details stationed at key intersections, including Sam Nujoma and Herbert Chitepo roads, where they were seen monitoring and arresting motorists flouting traffic rules.
Equipped with digital cameras, the police are targeting offenders who use mobile phones while driving, travel against traffic, or disregard traffic signals.
At the Sam Nujoma and Herbert Chitepo intersection, this publication witnessed several motorists being apprehended for crossing red lights, improper lane usage, and using phones while driving.
A police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained the procedure.
“We first capture the offence on camera to provide irrefutable evidence before making an arrest. This way, offenders cannot dispute the charges. It is our duty to enforce traffic laws, and we will not hesitate to arrest errant drivers and impound their vehicles where necessary. This operation is aimed at restoring order on our roads, particularly during this busy festive period,” said the officer.
The operation has been met with mixed reactions, though many city residents praised the police for their proactive approach.
“I think this is a great initiative. The roads in the CBD are always chaotic, and these mushikashika [illegal transport operators] drivers make it worse. If the police continue like this, we might finally have order in the city,” said Fungai Mavhunga, a Harare resident.
Another motorist, Tendai Dube, also applauded the operation.
“The digital cameras are a game changer. Drivers know they can’t argue with clear evidence of their offenses. It’s about time we had a serious crackdown on reckless driving,” said Dube.
The festive season typically sees an increase in road traffic, with the ZRP focusing on reducing accidents and congestion in urban centres.
By targeting reckless drivers and enforcing traffic regulations, the police hope to improve safety and order on Zimbabwe’s roads.
As operations continue, the ZRP has urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic laws to avoid arrests and ensure a safer festive season for all.
