Government has urged the Lotteries and Gaming Board to adopt robust strategies to regulate the fast-growing gaming sector while ensuring responsible gaming practices.

The gaming industry in Zimbabwe, encompassing casinos, sports betting, raffles, and lotteries, has experienced a surge in investment interest. While this growth presents significant revenue opportunities, the Government emphasized the need to maintain a balance between industry expansion and the protection of vulnerable communities.

Speaking at the official opening of the Board’s strategic planning workshop held in Masvingo on December 4, 2024, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Chido Sanyatwe, underscored the importance of strict adherence to regulatory frameworks.

“I call upon the board to intensify strategies that enhance compliance with the gaming industry’s governing regulatory framework. These strategies must ensure adherence by all operators. The growing appetite to invest in the gaming industry must be controlled and balanced with revenue growth, protection from gambling harm, and social responsibility,” she said.

In response, the Lotteries and Gaming Board reaffirmed its commitment to promoting responsible gaming practices.

Lotteries and Gaming Board interim secretary, Dr Misheck Chingozho, highlighted that responsible gaming remains a top priority as they craft strategies to improve service delivery and safeguard players.

“We continue striving to ensure improved service delivery and satisfaction for our clients. Strategies that enhance responsible gaming practices remain top of this workshop agenda.

“Moving forward, the Lotteries and Gaming Board is expected to implement comprehensive measures that align with the Government’s call for increased oversight. These include monitoring operators, promoting awareness on gambling harm, and ensuring compliance with existing regulations,” Dr. Chingozha stated.

The Lotteries and Gaming Board has also demonstrated its commitment to social responsibility through several community projects.

Among its notable contributions is the construction of the Harava Waiting Mother’s Shelter and ancillary facilities in Zaka, aimed at improving maternal health services. Additionally, the board has supported the development of an interpretive centre at Kamungoma National Monument in Gutu, enhancing cultural preservation and tourism.

As investment in the gaming sector continues to grow, the Government’s emphasis on compliance and responsible gaming signals a proactive approach to mitigate potential risks associated with gambling. Ensuring a well-regulated environment will not only protect consumers but also foster sustainable industry growth.

With a strategic plan that prioritizes both industry development and player protection, Zimbabwe’s gaming sector is poised for growth that benefits all stakeholders while safeguarding societal well-being.
