Government, in collaboration with its partner Charity Water, has launched a new piped water scheme in Masekera, Guruve, benefiting over 1,000 residents in line with its commitment to providing clean and safe water to every citizen.

This initiative is part of efforts to improve water availability and aligns with the country's Vision 2030 objectives for sustainable development.

Speaking during the handover ceremony recently, Mashonaland Central Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Christopher Magomo, hailed the scheme as a major milestone for the community.

"The NDS1 prioritises the provision of potable water and sanitation as essential components for achieving sustainable development and improving public health across Zimbabwe. The Masekera piped water scheme exemplifies this commitment," Minister Magomo said.

The new piped water system is expected to serve over 1000 residents, alleviating long-standing challenges in accessing clean water.

Previously, residents had to wake up in the early hours of the morning to fetch water from distant streams that often ran dry.

One villager expressed relief at the new development, saying, "We used to wake up as early as 2 or 3 a.m. to fetch water from streams. This new piped water scheme has brought a huge change and relief to our lives."

Other residents echoed similar sentiments, expressing their gratitude for the improved water access.

"This project has made life easier for us. No more long distances to find water or sleepless nights worrying about clean water for our families," another resident applauded.

The piped water initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance water and sanitation in the Guruve district.

Eight other piped water schemes have been established and await commissioning, while significant progress has been made in rehabilitating and drilling boreholes throughout the region.

The efforts to improve water accessibility reflect the country’s commitment to achieving an upper-middle-income society by 2030 through sustainable development goals in water and sanitation.
