A powerful storm has struck Chivi District, particularly affecting the Chivi Central Constituency, and leaving a trail of significant destruction.
The storm, which raged over the past 48 hours, caused extensive damage to critical infrastructure, including schools and healthcare facilities, and has disrupted services for thousands of residents.
Among the worst-hit institutions are Berejena Primary and Secondary Schools, which sustained severe damage from the storm’s high winds and torrential rain.
Other affected facilities include Mushai Primary School, Mavende Primary School, and Zibuku Clinic, with Mavende Primary suffering extensive structural damage, including the collapse of some section ns of the school building.
The impact of the storm has forced some schools to dismiss learners early as a safety precaution.
Authorities report that other areas bordering Chivi, such as Mberengwa and Mazvihwa, also experienced significant infrastructure damage due to the adverse weather.
The destruction has disrupted both education and healthcare services, compounding the challenges faced by local communities.
Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana confirmed the extent of the damage in a statement on the social media platform X.
“The situation is being assessed, and immediate relief measures are being put in place. We are working to ensure that schools and clinics can resume operations as soon as possible. Interventions are being made through the Civil Protection Unit (CPU),” he stated, emphasizing the Government’s commitment to mobilizing resources for recovery and rehabilitation.
Local authorities and emergency response teams have been deployed to assess the extent of the damage and provide assistance to affected residents.
Clean-up and recovery efforts are underway, although challenges remain due to the scale of the destruction.
Meanwhile, officials from the Civil Protection Unit have urged residents to remain cautious, warning that the storm’s aftermath may pose additional risks as the affected infrastructure is yet to be stabilized.
