Government has accelerated the distribution of agricultural inputs nationwide ahead of the 2024/25 farming season.
Yesterday, residents of Nyanga North constituency benefitted from this initiative, receiving maize seed and Compound D fertilisers under the Presidential Inputs Program.
The distribution was facilitated by Nyanga North Constituency legislator Chido Sanyatwe, who emphasised the program's role in promoting food security and empowering rural communities.
The Presidential Inputs Program is part of a broader strategy to enhance agricultural productivity across Zimbabwe.
It aims to provide households with necessary inputs, addressing challenges posed by climate change and reducing reliance on imported food. In addition to maize seed and fertilisers, the program supports other key crops tailored to regional needs and climate conditions.
Honourable Sanyatwe expressed gratitude for the initiative, highlighting its potential to transform local farming practices.
"President Mnangagwa's commitment to supporting our farmers cannot be overstated. These inputs will go a long way in ensuring that our farmers are well-prepared for the season and can contribute to the national goal of food self-sufficiency. It is encouraging to see so many families benefiting from this program, and I am confident it will help improve livelihoods in our constituency," she said.
Local farmers, like Peter Moyo, expressed optimism about the support.
"This program has really helped us. We were struggling to buy fertilisers and seeds on our own, but now we are getting the support we need. If the rains come as expected, we are hopeful that we will be able to harvest enough to feed our families and maybe even sell some in the local markets," Moyo said.
The distribution of inputs has generated enthusiasm among farmers, with many citing the potential for increased productivity and improved incomes.
The Presidential Inputs Program has been lauded for its role in stimulating the agricultural sector, particularly in rural areas where farming is the primary source of livelihood.
The initiative not only aims to strengthen food security at the household level but also contributes to Zimbabwe’s long-term agricultural and economic resilience.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially launched the 2024/25 Pfumvudza/Intwasa program on October 16, 2024, in Gwebu Village, Buhera District, Manicaland Province.
This launch marked the commencement of input distribution for the summer cropping season, underscoring the government's commitment to climate-proofed agriculture and food security.
