President Mnangagwa has officially launched an online National Anti-Sanctions Petition, calling for the immediate and unconditional removal of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by Western nations.
The launch took place today at Bulawayo’s City Hall during a ceremony to mark the 5th anniversary of SADC Anti-Sanctions Day, with the President describing the sanctions as illegal and detrimental to the country's economic progress.
In his speech, President Mnangagwa expressed gratitude to Zimbabwe's regional allies in SADC and beyond for their continued support and solidarity in the fight against what he termed “unjust sanctions,” which have long hampered Zimbabwe's ability to fully engage in international trade and investment.
"Sanctions are strangling our economy, undermining our right to self-determination, and compromising the collective development aspirations of our country,” President Mnangagwa said.
He stressed the need for increased national productivity and resilience in the face of these economic pressures, declaring, "Together, we are overcoming the negative impact of these unjust and illegal measures."
The newly launched digital petition, which allows citizens to sign online, is part of a broader initiative to amplify Zimbabwe’s anti-sanctions campaign.
"It is the duty of all of us to raise awareness on the negative effects of illegal sanctions on our country and people," President Mnangagwa said.
He encouraged media houses, ICT platforms, and lobby groups to partner in spreading the message.
President Mnangagwa called on all Zimbabweans to remain united in their stance against the sanctions, urging them to work hard towards achieving Vision 2030, which aims to transform Zimbabwe into a prosperous and industrialized nation.
“Our unity, resilience, and fortitude will ultimately break the grip of these sanctions. Zimbabwe is emerging stronger, and we will continue to build our nation. Despite the existence of these heinous and inhumane sanctions, Zimbabwe remains a friend to all and an enemy to none,” he said.
National Executive Director of Citizens Against Economic Sanctions, Martin Zharare, reiterated the President’s sentiments, arguing that the sanctions are unwarranted and unjustified.
“These sanctions are punitive and have crippled the ordinary Zimbabwean. They are not justified and should be removed immediately to allow the country to recover and prosper,” Zharare said.
Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Omphile Marupi, also condemned the measures, highlighting their illegality under international law.
“The sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by Western nations are a violation of the United Nations Charter. They are illegal and should be removed to restore Zimbabwe's full participation in global economic activities,” Deputy Minister Marupi remarked.
ZICOSU national leader, Pijiwest Nhamburo, added his voice, emphasizing the detrimental impact on youth opportunities.
“These sanctions are killing the dreams of young Zimbabweans by stifling economic opportunities. We stand firm in condemning these sanctions and will continue to fight for their removal,” Nhamburo declared.
The SADC Anti-Sanctions Day was established in 2019 as a day for the region to collectively denounce the sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.
