Government has applauded the private sector for its active role in supporting infrastructure development projects that drive urban renewal programs.

In a significant boost to Chegutu's development, a local investor is undertaking a US$3.5 million project to construct a multipurpose business complex in the town, marking a pivotal moment in its transformation.

In an interview with this publication, Minister of State for Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Marian Chombo who recently toured the site and commended the project.

"I’m impressed by this development, especially since it’s driven by a local investor. This shows that people are heeding President Mnangagwa’s call for citizens to build their country. We are moving forward with urban renewal, and we invite more private sector participation as we work towards Vision 2030,” she said.

Chegutu Town Council Mayor, Mr Rydes Machekera expressed the Council’s support for the project.

"This public-private partnership is a win-win. It aligns with the Government’s Vision 2030 of creating an upper-middle-income society by 2030. The multipurpose complex, set on 4,000 square meters of land, is being developed under a 25-year build-operate-transfer (BOT) agreement and the facility will become Council property, adding to our revenue base.

“The project is a welcome change for many residents, who recall the area's troubled past. The place had become a hotspot for criminal activities like mugging and rape due to its abandoned state. We are excited to witness this development, which will not only enhance our town’s infrastructure but also improve our safety," said Mayor Machekera.

CEO of Addarcon, Demand Gwatinetsa praised the initiative and its alignment with national goals.

"This US$3.5 million investment is something we’re proud of as a local company. Our President encourages local investment, and with the support we’re receiving, we’re eager to contribute more to infrastructure development.

“A key feature of the development is the rehabilitation of the town's public swimming pool, which holds significant historical value. The pool, built in 1945, is part of our town’s identity. We are excited to see it being revived and to reconnect with that piece of our history,” explained Gwatinetsa.

Government is currently implementing the Urban Renewal Project, aimed at modernizing old and deteriorating suburbs into smart cities, in line with its Vision 2030 goals. Chegutu’s latest development represents a crucial step in that journey.
