Government has lauded the successful hosting of the 44th Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit, held on August 17, 2024.

The Summit, which saw full representation from all SADC member states, was a major milestone for the country, highlighting its capability to host significant international events.

During a post cabinet briefing the Minister.   of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Jenfan Muswere, reflected on the achievements and challenges of the Summit, emphasizing that the event was a resounding success.

“Cabinet joins the nation in congratulating His Excellency the President on assuming the SADC Chairmanship and for successfully hosting the 44th SADC Summit. Over 3,000 delegates were accredited during the Summit, and 2,306 during the preceding SADC Industrialisation Week, with the accreditation process proceeding “flawlessly under secure conditions,” he noted.

The success of the Summit was bolstered by extensive preparatory works in the Greater Harare, including the rehabilitation of major city roads connecting Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport to key hotels, and significant upgrades to the airport’s VVIP Pavilion.

“The scope of works targeted for the Greater Harare in preparation for the Summit were well done,” Minister Muswere added, “these included the refurbishment of hotel floors, installation of standby generators to ensure sustainable power supply, and enhanced internet connectivity and mobile network coverage to host a seamless Summit.”

Minister Muswere went on to note that the SADC Industrialisation Week was another highlight.

“The SADC industrialization week was another pertinent highlight as it attracted over 3,500 participants from local, regional, and international spheres. President Mnangagwa’s public lecture at the University of Zimbabwe, which was live-streamed, further underscored the event’s success,” he said.

Meanwhile, looking ahead, Government is keen to maintain the momentum generated by the Summit. It has resolved to complete all outstanding projects related to the Summit and accelerate the development of the New City in Mt. Hampden.

Similarly, the Inter-Ministerial Task Force on Preparations for Hosting the 44th SADC Summit, led by Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, July Moyo, has been tasked with remaining active and committed to the implementation of ongoing projects and the management of future SADC meetings.
