Yesterday marked the commencement of the Women’s Political Participation and #HeForShe Recruitment Drive at the New Parliament Building.

The workshop, aimed to review women’s political participation in Zimbabwe, exploring success stories, policy reforms, and initiatives to bolster women’s roles in politics. It sought to challenge patriarchal stereotypes and advocate for gender equality through the #HeForShe program.

The event drew a diverse group of participants united in their support for gender equality. The Zimbabwe Women’s Parliamentary Caucus spearheaded efforts to raise awareness and promote the #HeForShe movement across the country, focusing on gender equality and women empowerment.

Mr. Isaac Maposa, the Executive Director of the Zimbabwe Institute, lauded Government for supporting gender equality in politics.

“Finally, we get to acknowledge and celebrate Government for taking the lead step forward in support of women, we acknowledge our Speaker of Parliament  Advocate Jacob Mudenda, who is a key champion for gender equality. Today, he is joined by more MPs willing to be counted among those taking a stand against patriarchy; you have stepped forward and said ‘not under our watch’ and ‘not during our time in parliament’. #HeForShe is about us, men, standing up for gender equality and against all forms of discrimination against women,” Maposa said.

In his closing remarks the Deputy President of the Senate, Honorable Michael Nyambuya, emphasized the essential role men must play in promoting women’s political participation.

"Men have a critical role in advancing gender equality, we must understand that this is not just a women issue but a societal one that requires our active involvement and commitment. Women are equal partners in the development of our nation, and it is our duty to support and empower them in every sphere, including politics," he said.

In addition Honorable Nyambuya highlighted the importance of inclusiveness in nation building.

"Our nation's progress depends on harnessing the full potential of all its citizens, and this includes the invaluable contribution of women. By promoting women's political participation, we are not just ensuring justice and equality, but we are also enriching our democratic processes with diverse perspectives and innovative solutions in line with vision 2030,” he stated.
