The national airline, Air Zimbabwe, is set to enhance its fleet following the completion of flying tests for the newly acquired plane from Jet Network, of the United States of America.
Air Zimbabwe's fleet expansion marks a significant milestone in its efforts to revitalize and grow its operations
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister, Felix Mhona highlighted the broader impact of this development, stating that the growth of Air Zimbabwe facilitates the opening and connection to markets, trade and enables industries to link into global supply chains.
“It is commendable for the national airline to increase its fleet as it boosts a brand that has weathered turbulence in recent years, a brand that is on a recovery trajectory,” said Mhona.
Minister Mhona further noted that this strategic move aims to boost tourism and business travel, providing more options for passengers as well as increasing the airline’s competitiveness in the regional aviation market.
“This expansion is expected to cater for the growing demand for regional travel, thereby strengthening the airline’s position in the market. The strategic addition of the new aircraft underscores Air Zimbabwe’s commitment to enhancing its fleet capabilities and providing reliable service to its passengers,” said Mhona.
According to a source within the airline, one of the planes, ERJ 145, was scheduled to commence operations on the Harare to Johannesburg route before the end of May 2024, marking a significant step in the airline’s expansion plans.
"The introduction of the ERJ 145 Embraer, along with the strategic use of the Boeing 767 for charter services, highlights the airline's commitment to meeting passenger demand and improving service reliability. This development is expected to enhance regional connectivity and contribute positively to the airline's future growth."
The source also highlighted that the ERJ 145 is poised to fly four times a week between Harare and Johannesburg, enhancing connectivity between Zimbabwe and South Africa.
"The ERJ 145 will soon operate four weekly flights between Harare and Johannesburg. Presently, the airline operates the Boeing 737, dubbed "Jongwe," on routes from Harare to Dar es Salaam, Victoria Falls, and Bulawayo.
Meanwhile, the Boeing 767, introduced to the fleet in March 2024, remains dedicated to Government charters and is leased to Jet Ex Aerospace, a South African company, for $170,000 per month.
The procurement of the new plane reaffirms President Mnangagwa’s vision to grow Zimbabwe into an Upper-Middle-Income Economy by 2030, with air transport, through Air Zimbabwe, playing a critical role in enabling this endeavor.
