The Government of Zimbabwe is actively working on developing regulatory frameworks and guidelines to address the challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ensure its responsible and ethical use.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings.
Speaking to this publication, Minister of Information, Communication, Technology, Postal, and Courier Services, Tatenda Mavetera, said the Government is coming up with a policy that will bring about legislation that promotes the ethical use and adoption of AI.
"We are coming up with a policy that seeks to explain how Zimbabwe is prepared to embrace AI and what laws we are supposed to enact in relation to the adoption of AI. AI is fluid, like cyber security, so we have to be aware that as much as there are good things to harness, but there are also some bad elements,” Minister Mavetera said.
Technology expert Takudzwa Chada said that although AI has the potential to revolutionise various industries, there are risks that include the spread of misinformation, privacy violations, the amplification of bias, and so on.
“AI must be regularised as there are concerns about the potential misuse of AI, where systems could go rogue and pose a threat to humanity. Therefore, regulation is necessary to ensure safety, protect privacy and civil rights, and address potential risks associated with AI,” said Chada.
Furthermore, Chanda highlighted that the United States of America and China have heightened efforts to regulate AI.
“Recently, US President, Joe Biden, issued an executive order on AI that established standards for security and privacy protections. China also issued guidelines meant to regulate the ethical use of AI,” stated Chanda
Meanwhile, the steps being taken by Zimbabwe to regulate AI will help prevent disruptions that result in the destruction of businesses, data privacy, and Government programmes.
