Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga is set to officially open the tobacco sales floors, with farmers across the country anticipating improved prices this year.

Despite facing challenges due to erratic rainfall patterns, tobacco growers remain optimistic about the prospects for this season. Farmers are buoyed by the robust demand for Zimbabwean tobacco on the global market.

An official from the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB), who preferred anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to the media, confirmed that VP Chiwenga will open the floors tomorrow.

“Yes, VP Chiwenga will open the auction floors tomorrow. Farmers can expect to receive 75 percent of their earnings in foreign currency, with the remaining portion disbursed in local currency. This year, only two auction floors—the Tobacco Sales Floor and Premier Tobacco Auction Floors—were licenced, and this aims to foster a competitive market environment, ensuring fair opportunities for growers,” said the official.

The same official said that tomorrow's official opening ceremony marks a significant milestone for the industry, with Vice President Chiwenga's presence underscoring the Government's commitment to supporting agricultural initiatives.

Meanwhile, the Harare Post learned that preparations at the auction floors are in full swing, with officials meticulously arranging logistics to ensure seamless operations.

Comprehensive measures, including well-equipped clinics and robust sanitation protocols, have been put in place to safeguard the health and well-being of all participants.

At Premier Tobacco Auction Floors (PTAF), deliveries have been pouring in, reflecting the enthusiasm and anticipation among farmers for the upcoming season.

PTAF officials who spoke to this publication expressed confidence in the season ahead, emphasising timely payments and enhanced payment systems to benefit farmers.

This publication also discovered that some innovative payment systems, such as EcoCash and Mukuru, were established with the aim of streamlining transactions and enhancing efficiency throughout the marketing process.

Meanwhile, TIMB recently announced encouraging export figures, with the previous year witnessing 233,896,182 kilogrammes of tobacco valued at US$1.224 billion exported by December 15, 2023. Notably, the average price per kilogramme saw a commendable increase compared to the previous year, signalling positive momentum for farmers.
