Moreblessing Ali family has strongly voiced their support for their family lawyer and leader of the newly formed National Democratic Working Group (NDWG), Job Sikhala, in the wake of harassment and humiliation the latter suffered at the hands of suspected Nelson Chamisa’s loyalists during the burial of Moreblessing last Saturday.
The burial, held at Zororo Memorial Park in Chitungwiza, was marred by disruptions as individuals purportedly aligned with Chamisa hurled insults and vulgarities at Sikhala, labelling him an enemy and traitor.
In a press statement released yesterday, the Ali family spokesperson, Washington, clarified their stance, expressing solidarity with Sikhala and shedding light on the circumstances surrounding his involvement in the funeral proceedings.
"Our family firmly maintained the position that Moreblessing Ali’s interment would not proceed until our family lawyer, Honourable Job Sikhala, was released from prison. We had engaged Honourable Sikhala to represent us when we were in the dark about Moreblessing Ali’s whereabouts following her disappearance in May 2022. His legal expertise guided us through the intricate legal landscape, enabling us to seek answers about our relative’s fate. We patiently awaited Honourable Sikhala’s release, recognising the sacrifices he made on behalf of our family," the statement read.
The family expressed profound disapproval of the violent incidents, reportedly led by Chamisa supporters, that transpired during the burial, condemning the inhumane and insensitive actions witnessed.
Political commentator Calvin Chitsunge weighed in on the situation, noting the conspicuous absence of Chamisa's name in the Ali family's statement and their explicit support for Sikhala.
"The Ali family's clarification that Sikhala was indeed their lawyer and their censure of Chamisa's supporters' behaviour during the burial indicates siding with Sikhala while castigating Chamisa. Such actions by Chamisa's supporters may backfire, as people will not want to associate with a party that lacks political tolerance,” said Chitsunge.
Chitsunge highlighted the potential repercussions for Chamisa's political standing, emphasising the importance of political tolerance and respect for differing views within a democratic society.
The behaviour of Chamisa’s supporters once again proved that the opposition was a violent lot.
