Zimbabwe braces itself as the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Preparatory Mission, led by the bloc’s Deputy Executive Secretary, Dr. Judith Kateera, is set to jet into the country today to assess the nation's readiness for the forthcoming 44th SADC Summit in August.
In a statement, Michael Mukura, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, announced the imminent arrival of the SADC Preparatory Mission.
"The team will provide Zimbabwe with guidelines based on SADC minimum standards regarding the obligations when hosting the Summit. Zimbabwe will be provided with the opportunity to present reports on the state of preparedness towards hosting the Summit in Harare in August 2024," Mukura stated.l
The Preparatory Mission, a technical team, is tasked with evaluating Zimbabwe's readiness to host the prestigious summit.
With preparations at an advanced stage, the nation eagerly awaits the opportunity to showcase its capabilities on the regional stage.
Meanwhile, President Emmerson Mnangagwa's impending assumption of the SADC chairperson role adds a layer of significance to Zimbabwe's preparations.
Having previously served as SADC deputy chairperson during its 43rd summit held in Angola; President Mnangagwa is well-versed in the responsibilities that come with the position.
In an exclusive statement to this publication, a Government source, speaking on condition of anonymity, provided insights into the ongoing preparations.
"Preparations for hosting the summit are at an advanced stage. Currently, renovations are being done at Meikles and Rainbow Towers Hotels,” said the source.
The source further added that the Government had allocated sufficient financial and material resources to ensure the successful hosting of the summit.
The source added that as the SADC Preparatory Mission commences its evaluation, Zimbabwe remains steadfast in its commitment to meeting and exceeding SADC standards.
“With meticulous planning and ample resources allocated, the nation is poised to deliver a memorable and impactful summit experience,” said the source.
Meanwhile, with preparations reaching their zenith and resources allocated accordingly, Zimbabwe stands ready to make its mark on the regional stage come August.
