Citizens celebrate increased power generation

Government has received widespread praise from citizens as the national grid now boasts a robust power generation capacity exceeding 1430 megawatts (MW).

Of this impressive total, at least 1382 MW is being generated by the country’s major power producers (Zimbabwe Power Company), with an additional 48 MW sourced from Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

This milestone marks a crucial step towards achieving power self-sufficiency in the country.

In an exclusive interview with this publication, economic analyst, Elton Ziki, emphasised that the substantial increase in power supply was a clear indication that Zimbabwe was steadily progressing towards its goal of power self-sufficiency by 2025.

"The Government's commitment to boosting power generation is a positive sign for the nation's future. It not only aligns with Vision 2030 but also serves as a fundamental prerequisite for the growth of the country’s industries,” Ziki stated.

In addition, Ziki stressed that consistency in power supply would play a pivotal role in achieving the various projects designed to achieve Vision 2030.

"Many developmental projects require a stable and abundant power supply. If the current momentum is maintained, Vision 2030 becomes an achievable reality," he added.

More so, citizens have also echoed their appreciation for the increased power supply, emphasising the tangible benefits to their businesses.

Samuel Karikoga, a welder in Harare's Gazaland area, expressed gratitude, stating, "The recent improvement in power supply has been a game-changer for my business. With uninterrupted power supply, my production has seen a massive boost."

Furthermore, Karikoga recounted the impact of power shortages on his business, revealing, “During periods of power shortages, I faced significant losses as clients turned away due to production delays.”

Karikoga added that “the recent stability in power supply has been a game-changer for my operations, revitalising my business and bringing back clients who had been lost during those challenging times."

Nakai Masunungure, a butchery owner in Mbare, commended the increase in power supply, noting its critical role in sustaining her business.

"During times of erratic power supply, my business faced significant challenges. Electricity is not just a convenience but a necessity for us; it ensures our meat stays fresh and the overall efficiency of our operations remains intact. The recent improvement in power supply has indeed been a lifeline for us, allowing us to operate without the constant threat of disruptions,” she exclaimed.

Ultimately, Zimbabwe is reaping savings from reduced energy imports following improved domestic electricity generation, mainly from the upgraded Hwange Thermal Power Station and the rising contribution of Independent Power Producers.
