Chitungwiza Town Council evicts tenants

Chitungwiza Unit G residents will soon be forced to vacate their dwelling hostels since the location is now earmarked for a commercial centre by the CCC-led Chitungwiza Town Council.

During the 484th ordinary council meeting held today, the chairperson of the Public Works, Municipal Lands, and Environment Management Committee, Chamunorwa Madya, revealed that the Unit G dormitories were set to be demolished and replaced with a redesigned commercial mall.

"A redesigned shopping mall will take the place of the Unit G hostels, as the area has become a hot spot for cholera outbreaks,” said Madya

Madya further informed that a three months’ notice to vacate will be given to the tenants who unlawfully settled in the hostels following the first tenants' relocation to Nyatsime.

Councilor Madya pointed out that the existing inhabitants must find other homes because they invaded the property illegally and that there was no need to build houses for them.

Elton Ziki, a political analyst, described CCC-led councils as crooked, mismanaged and lacking appropriate strategy.

"Urban councils administered by the CCC are ill-managed and lack appropriate plans to enhance infrastructure and enhance people's lives in the process," Ziki said.

Ziki continued by saying that the Chitungwiza Municipality was still full of corrupt individuals, which is why they are collecting rent from tenants whose residences have not been legally allocated, while neglecting to provide suitable housing alternatives.

Meanwhile, since the opposition councils took over, there has been an increase in fraud, unlawful parceling of stands, and unpaid labour, among other issues. They lack effective management abilities, such as resource management, effective leadership, garbage collection, non-payment of salaries, to mention a few.
