Ahead of today's crucial by-elections that are happening in the country, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission's (ZEC) Chief Elections Officer (CEO), Utoile Silaigwana, has issued a strong call to citizens, urging them to exercise their democratic rights and vote.
In an interview with this publication at Mandwandwe High School polling station in Bulawayo’s ward 20, Silaigwana emphasised the significance of participating in shaping the nation's future.
"It is your right and responsibility to choose the leader who will represent you and your community. Your vote is your voice, and it's crucial to secure the future you envision for yourselves and your loved ones,” Silaigwana declared.
Moreover, he cautioned against voter apathy, reminding citizens that staying on the side-lines would not prevent the selection of a winner.
"Not voting does not mean there won't be a decision made. It simply means someone else will decide for you, potentially neglecting your priorities and concerns,” he stressed.
Silaigwana went on to emphasise voter education, urging Zimbabweans to familiarise themselves with the electoral process and their rights.
"Knowledge is power. By understanding the electoral policies, you will be empowered to cast your vote confidently, knowing your rights and ensuring your voice is heard,” said Silaigwana.
Additionally, expressing his satisfaction with the by-elections' smooth operation, Silaigwana commended the collaborative efforts of ZEC officials, security personnel, and political parties.
“We have witnessed a commendable level of cooperation and respect for the process. This bodes well for the future of our democracy,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, today's by-elections were initiated by the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) following internal factional disputes that resulted in the recall of certain members of parliament.
