The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) Chamisa faction is under intense scrutiny as allegations emerge that it was misleading its supporters by falsely claiming that disqualified candidates remain eligible for the forthcoming by-elections slated for February 3, 2024.
This controversy deepened after a High Court ruling favoured the removal of 23 CCC candidates, including prominent figures such as deputy spokesperson, Gift Ostallos Siziba, Amos Chibaya, and ex-Harare Mayor, Ian Makone.
However, Chamisa faction’s press statement yesterday raised eyebrows, with its spokesperson, Promise Mkwananzi dismissing the court ruling and accusing the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) of disseminating false information.
In a statement, Mkwananzi asserted, "Citizens Coalition for Change wishes to inform members that the statement by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission alleging that our candidates have been barred and therefore ZANU PF candidates have been duly elected following the High Court ruling of January 19, 2024 is false, inaccurate, misleading, and premature."
Political commentator, Calvin Chitsunge weighed in on the matter, emphasising the importance of confronting reality.
Chitsunge commented, "CCC should not take its supporters for a ride but must face the reality that some of its candidates are no longer eligible to represent the party in the forthcoming by-elections."
Chitsunge highlighted the CCC’s tendency to rely on emotions rather than reason, contributing to the political challenges it currently faces.
The political commentator further criticised the CCC Chamisa faction for not adhering to legal processes and attempting to operate above the law.
"The political challenges CCC is facing are caused by the fact that they don't follow the law and want to always act above the law," he remarked.
With the February 3 by-elections fast approaching, the CCC Chamisa faction finds itself ensnared in internal disputes, legal setbacks, and allegations of misinformation.
That party's failure to acknowledge the disqualified candidates' ineligibility raises concerns about its commitment to transparent and lawful political practices.
