The political landscape within the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) took a dramatic turn this week, as that party’s senior members criticized Nelson Chamisa's recent campaign message delivered in Gweru.
A reliable source confided in the Harare Post, that senior members in the CCC were castigated the address that Chamisa made at Gweru campaign launch rally saying the address was unstructured, unrealistic, and fallacious.
The Gweru rally, which took place last weekend, was intended to mobilize CCC's support base and provide an opportunity for the party's leaders to convey their strategy and campaign promises.
However, the rally instead sparked internal discontent, with CCC members reportedly stating that Chamisa's address failed to deliver a convincing message to the electorate.
The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed that a growing number of CCC members are beginning to doubt Chamisa's capacity to lead the party. This dissatisfaction arises from a perceived lack of a coherent, compelling, and realistic message from the party's presidential candidate.
Adding to the party's woes, several CCC heavyweights, including Welshman Ncube, Joel Gabuza, Thokozani Khupe, and Tendai Biti, boycotted the Gweru rally.
According to the source, the bigwigs’ absence from the rally pointed to deepening rifts within the CCC and raises questions about the party's unity and cohesion in the run-up to the upcoming elections.
Political analyst, Terrence Chipwanya said that these developments signal a worrisome period for the CCC, a party that has positioned itself as a viable alternative to the ruling party.
“However, the on-going internal disputes and doubts about Chamisa's leadership could potentially harm the party's appeal to the electorate. CCC needs to address these issues urgently to maintain its credibility and electoral prospects. Public divisions and leadership challenges could undermine the CCC's position in the political landscape. The party needs to reassure its supporters by presenting a united front and a clear, compelling campaign message,” said Chipwanya.
As the election draws closer, all eyes will be on the CCC as it grapples with these internal challenges. The party's ability to resolve these issues will be key to maintaining the confidence of its supporters and presenting a formidable challenge to the ruling party.
