President Emmerson Mnangagwa has slammed Innscor's pricing system, saying it is exploitative and unfair to consumers.
Innscor is a major food and beverage company in Zimbabwe, with a range of brands that include Chicken Inn, Bakers Inn, and National Foods.
The President accused the company of charging exorbitant prices for its products, which has made it difficult for many Zimbabweans to afford them.
In a speech yesterday in Chivhu, President Mnangagwa said that Innscor's pricing system was "unacceptable" and that the company should "do the right thing" by reducing its prices.
The President said that the government would not hesitate to take action against Innscor if it did not comply with his request.
"I am aware that some companies have been taking advantage of the current economic challenges to charge exorbitant prices for their products. I want to warn these companies that they should not take people for granted. The government will not hesitate to take action against them," President Mnangagwa said.
President Mnangagwa's comments come at a time when Zimbabwe is facing economic challenges caused by price hikes and exchange rate volatility.
Innscor is not the only company that has been accused of price-gouging. Other companies that have been targeted by consumers include Delta Beverages, Dairiboard, and OK Zimbabwe.
Political analyst, Lawrence Mukusha said that President Mnangagwa's comments on Innscor were a sign that the government was aware of the problems.
"The President’s comments on Innscor’s pricing system are an indication that the government is alive to the challenges facing the people. I have faith that measures recently announced by the government to stabilise the local currency will soon bear fruits and cause a reduction in prices," said Chipwanya.
