Government is committed to upholding constitutionalism, rule of law, governance and protecting the country’s constitutionally enshrined rights and freedoms, President Mnangagwa has said.

Speaking at the High Level Debt Resolution Forum in Harare today, President Mnangagwa said that socio-economic milestones achieved to date had resulted in the economy registering notable growth.

“Public enterprise reforms, which are part of our national development and modernisation agenda, remain a priority. My Government stands committed to consolidating constitutionalism, the rule of law, good governance and protecting our constitutionally enshrined rights and freedoms. Socio–economic milestones achieved to date, through our own domestic resources, have resulted in the economy registering notable GDP (Growth Domestic Product) growth,” said the President.

President Mnangagwa added that his Government was committed to clearing its external and domestic debt as it was weighing heavily on the country’s socio-economic development agenda.

According to the President, there was accelerated implementation of the Arrears Clearance, Debt Relief and Restructuring Strategy, while transparency and accountability was being nurtured through regular reporting as well as the publication of public debt statistics and information.

Additionally, President Mnangagwa said that Zimbabwe’s sustainable economic recovery agenda required augmentation by a comprehensive arrears clearance and debt resolution process which was backed by the International Financial Institutions and the international community at large.

The President added that despite the country being faced by a debt overhang and the illegal sanctions imposed by the West, it had, however, achieved some economic growth.

“In spite of the challenges associated with the debt overhang and further exacerbated by the albatross of the illegal economic sanctions, Zimbabwe is realising key milestones towards moving our country forward for the good of our people. Guided by Vision2030 and the NDS1, tremendous progress has been made through reforms to achieve macro-economic stability and sustainable inclusive economic growth,” added the President.

Meanwhile, President Mnangagwa is set to travel to the United Arab Republic of Egypt, where he has been invited by his counterpart, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and would take advantage of the Africa Development Bank (AfDB) Summit scheduled for Egypt to engage representatives of creditor nations, as the country presses on with plans to clear its debt and arrears.
