Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) led Harare City Council (HCC) has failed to provide constant and adequate water supply to residents who are now leaving in fear of contracting cholera and other diseases.
A Harare resident, Isaac Chatambudza who spoke to this publication, revealed that there had been a rapid rise in the cholera outbreak in Harare with over a 100 cases having been reported since last month.
“We are now living in fear as taps remain dry, this has already resulted in more than 100 cases of cholera being reported since last month,” said Chatambudza.
Chatambudza indicated that HCC has dismally failed the residents as the City’s sewer system was in a deplorable state leaving residents exposed to diseases.
According to Chatambudza, residents have resorted to bush defecation due to shortage of water in Harare.
“Residents are now defecating in the bush and drains because there is no water. The council has let us down. Water is a basic need and I wonder how we will survive without water. If we continue with this irresponsible council, we will lose more people to cholera and other diseases,” said Chatambudza.
Another resident, Chipo Marumisa said that it was frustrating that the council was not delivering adequate service when residents were religiously paying their rates.
“We have approached the council to air our grievances but it has turned to no avail as the frustrating situations continue. It is infuriating that we pay our bills and rates but this council is failing to give us adequate service. We will deal with these incompetent councilors during this year’s elections. We want to use our votes to send them away from Town House,” said Marumisa.
Meanwhile, efforts to get a comment from HCC spokesperson, Innocent Ruwende, were futile as his mobile phones were not reachable.
