A total of 420.92km on Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge have now been opened to traffic as Government continues to make significant progress in road rehabilitation, the Harare Post has learnt.
The Office of the President and Cabinet Director of Media Service, Dr Anywhere Mutambudzi, confirmed the developments on his Twitter handle.
Dr Mutamburi said that Bitumen World had completed and opened a road stretch of 112km, Fossil 100km, Masimba Construction 70.02 km, Tensor Systems 67,5km while Trial Section (Demo) had 7,2km making it a total of 420,92km.
According to reports, Government has allocated $130 billion on road rehabilitation, gravelling and drainage structuring as part of the Second Republic’s Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme 2 (ERRP2) this year.
Construction expert, Tatenda Gambiza commended the Government’s move to take over the rehabilitation and reconstruction of roads in towns and cities after realising that the councils had failed to do so.
“The Government took over the rehabilitation and reconstruction of roads in towns and cities after realising that the inept opposition was failing and was unable to channel funds towards rehabilitation. Local authorities should play their roles and fulfil their mandates to show the nation that the money allocated to them by ZINARA is being used properly,” said Gambiza.
Urban councils have not been lacking in road rehabilitation only but have also come to be known for corruption and other vices as well. The Zimbabwe Women against Corruption Trust has launched a hashtag campaign against Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC)-led city and town councils over poor service delivery, the Harare Post has learnt.
Sandra Matendere, the Director of Zimbabwe Women Against Corruption said that women and girls had raised concerns about their failure to access clean water and sanitation.
“This negatively affects women from maintaining menstrual hygiene, exposing them to infections. We have realised that in most instances, poor service delivery is closely linked to corruption and misplaced priorities by local authorities,” said Sandra Matendere.
Meanwhile, the CCC led urban councils have been entangled in a myriad of corruption cases ranging from corruptly acquiring stands to misappropriation of funds. Lately, CCC leader, Nelson Chamisa has been castigated for his failure to account for Diaspora #GoFundMe funds, which were raised to buy his bullet-proof vehicle.
