Infrastructural development projects including the resuscitation of David Whitehead Textiles in Chegutu, that are being implemented by the Government under the 100-day cycle projects will create more jobs, a Cabinet Minister has announced
Speaking at a Post-Cabinet media briefing yesterday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa, said the resuscitation of David Whitehead Textiles would employ about 1 100 persons when complete.
“The resuscitation of David Whitehead Textiles in Chegutu has reached 40 percent of completion, with state-of-the-art spinning and weaving machinery in place. The project will employ up to 1 100 persons when complete,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.
Additionally, the Minister highlighted other projects which were nearing completion and set to benefit the communities.
“Refurbishment of the tar production plant at Zimchem in Kwekwe has reached 85 percent of completion, the expansion and modernisation of the Margarine Plant at Olivine Industries in Harare Metropolitan Province is almost ready for commissioning. The local production of margarine will reduce the volume of imports, the installation of a US$5 million Margarine Plant at Willowton in Mutare has reached 85 percent, and will produce up to 150 tonnes of margarine per day when complete. It will create employment for 50 people.
“The installation of a US$30 million state-of-the-art Bakery Plant in Bulawayo by Bakers Inn is 90% complete. The bakery will be the biggest in Zimbabwe, and will be producing 200 000 loaves per day; and the plant at Buffalo Brewing Company in Stapleford in Mashonaland West Province is functional, and His Excellency the President will soon commission the US$11 million plant,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.
Meanwhile, during the post-cabinet briefing, Minister Mutsvangwa also highlighted that Zimbabwe together with Ethiopia were the only countries in Africa that had attained wheat self-sufficiency.
“Zimbabwe together with Ethiopia were the only countries in Africa that attained self-sufficiency in wheat, with 375 131 metric tonnes (MT) being produced, against a national requirement of 360 000 MT. The nation is assured that the country has enough seed and basal fertiliser for the 2023 Winter Cereal Production season,” highlighted the Minister.
