President Emmerson Mnangagwa has conferred the late Major General (Rtd) Sydney Bhebhe who passed away on Monday, with a National Heroes status.

The President said this at the late Major General Bhebhe’s residence in Cranborne, where he had gone to convey his condolences.

President Mnangagwa acknowledged that Government has agreed to honour all well-disciplined Major Generals with a National Hero status, and that Major General (Rtd) Bhebhe is one of those who were well behaved.

We agreed that those with Major General Rank will be conferred with a hero status only if they behaved well. We know very well that Major General Retired Sydney Bhebhe was a well behaved man, very humble and very unassuming,” he said.

President Mnangagwa bemoaned the passing on of late National Hero Bhebhe and also expressed concern and grief that this comes as the country is still grieving the death of Major General (Rtd) Chanakira and Major General (Rtd) Nyathi who all passed within in a space of two weeks.

“The family must find comfort in that their son is now a son of government and you are not alone in mourning. The whole of government and the nation is mourning the loss,” he added.

Meanwhile a family representative Mr Irvine Bhebhe expressed his family’s gratitude for the honour bestowed upon their late relative.

We want to thank President Emmerson Mnangagwa for coming to be with us following the loss of our brother and for according him the highest honour in the country. We are very grateful,” he said.

The late National Hero Major General (Rtd) Bhebe is survived by his wife Sarah and three children.
