Planned shutdown condemned

Zimbabweans across the political divide have condemned the planned shutdown arguing that the economy cannot afford a deliberate setback when it is still smarting from the effects of Covid 19 induced lockdowns.

Exiled former Cabinet minister, Professor Jonathan Moyo, has urged Zimbabweans to shun the stay away being called for by the opposition saying that the people of Zimbabwe should not be used by those with selfish political agendas to destroy the country.

“Maimane (Mmusi) is a South African politician and an NDI puppet. He is not a Zimbabwean to justify his leading role in a shutdown campaign. Compatriots who want to be led by or associate with Maimane’s Shut down Zimbabwe plot should not expect everyone to join them,” said Prof Moyo.

Professor Moyo added that the planned illegal call for a stay away will inflict more misery to the local people and urged people not to be used.

“What does #Shutdown Zimbabwe mean” How come the #ShutDown Zimbabwe is trending in South Africa than anywhere else” Who will suffer and who will benefit if Zimbabwe is shutdown as being plotted,” asked Prof Moyo.

Daughter to MDC T president Douglas Mwonzora, Bertha Mwonzora, also said that Zimbabweans should not take heed of the planned stay away as it was not beneficial to the local people. Mwonzora urged Zimbabweans to be positive about their country instead of denigrating it.

“Why it is always about shutting down Zimbabwe but never about building Zimbabwe or support Zimbabwe businesses. Why always with the negative spin,” said Mwonzora.

The Zimbabwe Congress of Student Unions (ZICOSU) has also condemned the planned shut down and accused the instigators of using undiplomatic means to air their grievances.

In a statement yesterday, ZICOSU’s secretary general Bitton Ridgewell said he wishes that, “we treat Monday the 9th as a very normal day and be in the exact places we should be in as well as carrying out every duty we are supposed to be doing whilst we are working towards solving the current challenges correctly”.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police have encouraged Zimbabweans to report for work and continue with their usual businesses without fear. The police promised to deal with criminal elements who might want to cause commotion in the country.

Meanwhile, a survey conducted by this publication this morning revealed that the majority of Zimbabweans have shunned the call to stay away from work places and have chosen to conduct their businesses in the usual manner.
