Zimbabweans should embrace their local currency and start transacting in it as no country can develop without their own currency.
Speaking to the multitudes of ZANU PF supporters who thronged Tshefunye Business Centre in Tsholotsho for the Presidential Star Rally on Saturday, the Party’s Second Secretary, Cde Kembo Mohadi said that the use of the US dollar for local transactions was never meant to be permanent, but was a temporary measure to stabilise the economy.
“On the economic front, the New Republic has experienced tremendous successes. You may recall that we once used the US dollar and the opposition claims to have introduced it. This is not true, the US dollar was introduced by our own Finance Minister Cde Patrick Chinamasa and was never meant to be a permanent feature in our economy,” said Cde Mohadi.
Cde Mohadi accused the opposition of ruining the economy during the GNU era. He said contrary to opposition claims that it stabilised the economy during the GNU era, the economy instead contracted. He added that the issue of currency was about perceptions and urged Zimbabweans to love their currency in order to expand the economy.
Cde Mohadi said that the danger of not having one’s own currency was the owners of the foreign currency being used would dictate the country’s rate of development.
“However, we have an opposition who wants to tear down our own currency. This is sad because there is no country that develops without its own currency. Kufana lokuboleka inkomo ukuthi ulime.Ngeke uze ulime okwamampela ngenkomo ezingaso zako, ngoba ungavuka isuzithathelwe kumbe uzinikwa zilemithetho eminengi kakhulu. That is the same concept with currency if it is not yours, we cannot develop. The owners of the currency will dictate your rate of development. So let’s embrace our currency, it is ours and we should love it,” said Cde Mohadi.
Speaking to the same gathering, Cde Mohadi said ZANU PF’s goal was to transform rural areas by improving the economic and social conditions, He said the Government was geared to eliminate poverty through ensuring food security, creation of rural employment opportunities and ensuring adequate participation of the rural populace in the development process of the country.
Meanwhile, ZANU PF’s by elections candidate for Tsholotsho South constituency, Cde Musa Ncube, is confident of winning the seat. She is squaring off with several other candidates including Leonard Mthombeni of ZAPU.
