The MDC leader, Nelson Chamisa’s association with the G40, a former ZANU PF faction, is distressing members of his inner circle, with some threatening to quit if the ties continue.
That party’s National Spokesperson, Advocate Fadzayi Mahere had to wage a Twitter war against one of the G40 honchos, Professor Jonathan Moyo whom she accused of double standards following the latter’s scathing article in the Standard newspaper.
“You participated in creating a repressive system, then sit back and blame those who strongly opposed you for "not reforming" it? One day, Zimbabwe shall be free. Let's keep pushing," tweeted Mahere in response to Prof Moyo’s article.
Prof Moyo had written that “the political opposition in Zimbabwe, particularly the MDC, is stuck in the middle between making news headlines and making reform headways has been the bane of opposition politics in Zimbabwe as far back as one cares to remember.”
Insiders reveal that Mahere and a few others in Chamisa’s inner circle were against Prof Moyo whom they view as a threat to their positions.
“Prof Moyo is now the de facto Chief advisor to the president (Chamisa) and he has invested a lot of confidence in him. The official presidential advisors have been relegated to the terraces. Some of the advisors have threatened to quit over the issue,” said a senior official in the MDC Alliance.
“What irks them most is that Prof Moyo’s advices are always at cross purpose with the values of the party. The president is slowly becoming a dictator ever since he started hobnobbing with the G4O elements,” said the insider.
He, however, said although Prof Moyo was a divisive person, what he stated in the article was nothing but truth.
Another senior party official said that former ZANU PF legislator, Jeppy Jaboon was also directly advising Chamisa on intelligence matters.
“How can he entrust intelligence issues to a former political adversary. Jaboon is now his security advisor. Our security officers are not happy about it,” said the official adding that most of them had adopted a wait and see attitude.
During a mobilization meeting in Masvingo recently, MDC T Secretary General, Douglas Mwonzora revealed that they left the alliance because Chamisa had accommodated the G40 at the expense of the royal and veteran members who have been in the party since its formation.
Factionalism within the party has reached dizzy heights. The accommodation of former ZANU PF rebels has been cited as the major cause. The G40 elements were very divisive during their time in ZANU PF a culture they smuggled into the MDC Alliance. Factionalism within that party manifested in the shunning of the flash demonstrations which were supposed to have been staged yesterday.
