Higher and Tertiary Education Minister, Professor Amon Murwira has encouraged Government to introduce ‘heritage learning’ in tertiary institutions saying it was noble to utilize available local resources when learning.
Professor Murwira said these remarks while addressing students from different tertiary institutions who were gathered for a students’ interaction with President Emmerson Mnangagwa at HICC this Thursday.
Prof Murwira said, "There is need for the adoption of heritage learning, using local resources in learning and avoid depending on foreign curriculum."
In his presentation, Minister Murwira posited that it would be sensible if students were trained to manufacture amarula wine for instance, using amarula fruits that are found locally than finding foreign resources which he said maybe costly.
In addition Minister Murwira said, "We want to provide education that is productive and economic driven. The focus on education should be centered on teaching, research and consultancy."
He said previously, the ministry was largely focusing on teaching alone.
Professor Murwira commended the new dispensation saying it had added innovation and industrialization with the introduction of six new innovation hubs at universities.
The innovation hubs, he said, were opened to promote students who would have come up with innovative projects that they would want to explore and expand.
Notable Government officials who attended the students’ interface with the President include Minister of Primary Education, Professor Paul Mavhima, and Minister of State for Harare province, Miriam Chikukwa, among others.
