The Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) has lambasted the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leadership which they said were in politics for selfish reasons of lining their pockets at the expense of serving the people.
ZAPU provincial member, Lloyd Ndiweni while giving his opinion on the Supreme Court ruling which ruled that Nelson Chamisa was an illegitimate leader of the MDC, described that party as “dead”.
Last week, the Supreme Court ruled that Chamisa was not the legitimate leader of the MDC and has ordered the party to hold an extraordinary congress to choose a leader in three months’ time.
“This is a very good opportunity for another opposition to step in here and show the people that they can look forward to something different. This MDC thing is dead, looks like they are all in politics for selfish reasons,” said Ndiweni.
Ndiweni further said as much as he was a ZAPU member, the party had slim chances of winning a presidential election in Zimbabwe as it had little support base.
“Chances of ZAPU winning an election are very slim because our support base is very slim. However, our party is organised as compared to the MDC which is always fighting for positions. Zimbabweans need a better and mature opposition party not the MDC,” Ndiweni said.
Ndiweni’s sentiments were echoed by another ZAPU member, Kosalam Tshuma, who said the hope for MDC to dislodge ZANU PF was gone as the party was slowly disintegrating.
“We had hoped that the MDC will dislodge ZANU PF from power because it was well funded from abroad but I think that will not happen in the near future. The MDC is disorganised and its top positions are occupied by selfish members who only want things that benefit them. This might be the reason ubaba Dabengwa (Dumiso) pulled out of the MDC Alliance because he had seen the calibre of the MDC members,” said Tshuma.
Tshuma further said that with the coming of Thokozani Khupe at the helm of MDC, ZAPU might consider working with her as she is a bit mature as compared to Chamisa.
The MDC is embroiled in bitter power wrangles following the Supreme Court ruling which declared that Khupe should be the acting president of the party. Since then, reports of clandestine meetings by members plotting to outdo each other have filtered into the public domain.
