Gvt tours Cyclone Idai hit areas

Government through the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development yesterday toured the Cyclone Idai hit areas in Chimanimani to access progress on reconstruction of damaged infrastructure.

Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development, Joel Biggie Matiza who led the tour officially opened the Ministry of Transport strategic meeting in Mutare before visiting the recent Odzi accident victims at Mutare General Hospital.

Speaking at the strategic meeting, the minister said Government, through the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development was committed to improving road infrastructure in the country.

On its twitter handle, the Ministry of Transport twitted, “The Minister toured the Cyclone Idai-damaged areas and recently reconstructed Umvumvumvu Bridge in Chimanimani. The bridge was reconstructed by J.R. Goddard Contracting (JRG). Umvumvumvu number four bridge is at 95% completion stage and now opened to the public.

“Pupils from Komba Primary School in Lupane resumed classes after rehabilitation of classrooms by the Civil Protection Unit and World Vision. All the classrooms had their roofs blown away during a violent storm in November of 2019.”

Addressing journalists after visiting Odzi accident victims at Mutare General Hospital, the minister called for drivers to be cautious on the roads.

“The driver of an overloaded bus belonging to Munya Tours/General Bande seems to have lost control due to centrifugal force and then encroached onto the path of the oncoming truck laden with wet timber,” he said.
