New York correspondent, Hopewell Chin’ono has come out gun blazing on some former cabinet ministers who are opposed to the proposal by the Zimbabwe Church Councils of a seven-year Sabbath, labelling them looters.
Those on the forefront of dismissing the proposal have been the duo of former Higher Education and Finance Ministers, Prof Jonathan Moyo and Tendai Biti, respectively.
In a hard-hitting statement, Chin’ono said the Church’s call scared only looters and corrupt individuals.
He tweeted, “Corruption & Looters always get very vicious when your message threatens their thieving of State resources. The attacks we saw yesterday on @kennethmtata are normal when thieves feel cornered. Welcome to the club Reverend. When you speak truth without fear, you get attacked daily.”
Prof Moyo has a well-documented history of State looting whose apex symbol is ZimDef while, Biti’s Interfin deals are yet to be told to their fullest.
Biti also has issues to do with conveyance fees that are also yet to be told.
Meanwhile, the ZCC call has also exposed division in the opposition.
While the likes of Biti has taken a hard line stance, MDC Secretary for Education, Fadzai Mahere, called for soberness.
She tweeted, “Do you know that: We can have a rigorous debate about the @zccinzim proposal without attacking the personalities behind it? For or against, let’s debate the IDEA. Let’s not miss an opportunity to have a hearty debate about solutions, governance and the role of the Church in Zim.”
