Students from various State tertiary institutions have hailed Government’s decision to re-introduce the student loan scheme saying the noble decision will go a long way in promoting tertiary education.
This week, Government through the Ministry of Tertiary and Higher Education, Science and Technology Development revealed that it will be re-introducing the student loan scheme which will be accessed through higher and tertiary institutions and administered by the Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe (CBZ).
In an interview with this publication, a University of Zimbabwe (UZ) second year student, Cedrick Nyika who is currently studying Bachelor of Computer Science (Honors) said the re-introduction of loan facility by Government is a welcome development which is expected to improve tertiary education for most students whose parents are failing to raise the required money for their tuition.
Nyika said, “I am grateful that the new dispensation under President Emmerson Mnangagwa is making great strides in its endeavor to improve tertiary education in the country. I know of a number of students who were contemplating deferring next semester, citing financial problems due to economic hardships. As I speak, most students are not affording tertiary fees and accommodation.”
He added, “The loan scheme will certainly empower students to boost their access to education. The new development has brought us a glimmer of hope especially to those students who had lost hope to advance their education.”
The loan system has come as a huge relief for many students who have been failing to pay fees on time.
Kurai Mhembere, a Harare Polytechnic student who is studying a Diploma in Office Orderly commended the Government for the educational loan saying it will make life easier for both parents and students.
He said, “The re-introduction of a loan facility has come at the right time. Most of us have been finding it very difficult to pay our fees. Our parents were struggling to pay our tuition fees. This move will certainly lessen our financial burden.”
Students will start applying for the loan scheme by end of August 2019.
